About the Celtic Heritage Society

Celtic Heritage SocietyThe CHS was founded in Jackson, Mississippi in May 1992, as a 501(c)3 federally tax exempt civic and educational nonprofit organization. Our mission is to study, promote, and preserve Celtic traditions and culture. This includes music, dance, history, language, literature, art and other activities native to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall, and the Isle of Man. CelticFest Mississippi, now in its 21st year, serves as an important vehicle for meeting the society's mission of studying, promoting, and preserving the musical, artistic, and other cultural traditions of the Celtic nations. In addition to CelticFest Mississippi, the CHS sponsors céilís throughout the year (pronounced "kay-lee"--a Celtic celebration featuring traditional music and dance), as well as music events, fun and informative workshops, and meetings on topics such as Irish dance, Gaelic language, etc. CHS functions are intentionally family events--children are always welcome.

By its charter, membership in the CHS and participation in society functions are open to all. Immigrants from Celtic nations contributed much of their own heritage to Southern culture. We encourage participation of all in all CHS activities regardless of their own personal ethnic background.

CelticFest Mississippi is an annual event held at the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Museum since 1992. The festival has featured performances from many well-known Celtic musicians and artisans over the years. It has now grown to a 3-day event with 8 music/dance stages (over 40 performing groups, over 300 performers), 3 workshop areas (workshops on dance, musical instruments, Gaelic language, genealogy, history, literature, Irish culture, Celtic art, etc.), public dances, singing and music sessions, an educational children's area, numerous Celtic exhibits, ample vending of food and Celtic specialty items. CelticFest has featured many internationally acclaimed artists, including Paddy Keenan, Liz Carroll, Daithi Sproule, Billy McComiskey, Zan Mcleod, James Kelly, Mick Moloney, Seamus Egan, Eileen Ivers, Tim Britton, Ed Miller, Kieran O'Hare, Brendan Nolan, Cherish the Ladies, the Armagh Rhymers, and Chulrua.
